Councilwoman Schroder Hosts Fall National League of Cities Committee Meeting in Henderson

Councilwoman Gerri Schroder hosted the fall meeting of the National League of Cities (NLC) Community & Economic Development Committee (CED) in Henderson. The Councilwoman is the chair of the committee which consists of mayors and elected leaders from communities around the U.S.

The CED Committee is responsible for developing policy positions on issues involving housing, community and economic development, land use, recreation and parks, historic preservation and international competitiveness for NLC, which is an organization that advocates for the needs of the nation's cities and their leaders.

The fall meeting was attended by 25 committee members and events were held at various locations around Henderson. A highlight of the meeting was a daylong series of presentations and panel discussions focusing on a wide range of important topics and featuring local experts from Southern Nevada and staff from the City of Henderson. The sessions included:

  • A presentation focusing on national trends in community and economic development featuring Dr. Robert Lang, Director, Brookings Mountain West, UNLV.
  • A panel on how cities can succeed in the use of comprehensive planning featuring three City of Henderson staff members: Stephanie Garcia-Vause, Director of Community Development; Barbra Coffee, Director of Economic Development; and Alyssa Rodriguez, the city’s Traffic Engineer.
  • A panel discussion on addressing the workforce skills gap in Nevada featuring Manny Lamarre, Director, Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation; Kenadie Cobbin Richardson, Director of Business Engagement, Workforce Connections; and Chase Norlin, CEO, Transmosis.
  • A panel discussion on growing the healthcare industry in Henderson moderated by Mitch Fox of the Porter Group and featuring Dr. Victoria Shields, Provost, Nevada State College; Patricia Charlton, Senior Vice-President for Strategic Initiatives, College of Southern Nevada; Dr. Renee Coffman, President, Roseman University; and Dr. John Dougherty, Dean of Osteopathic Medicine, Touro University.
  • A presentation on federal legislative issues by Michael Wallace, NLC Federal Advocacy Program Director.

Committee members also toured several innovative and growing community and economic development projects and areas in Henderson including: Henderson Hospital, the Green Grass Project at Lake Las Vegas, Cornerstone Park and the surrounding Cornerstone Redevelopment Area and the West Henderson area which has been a focus of the city’s efforts to attract new business opportunities.
